The finest Japanese denims are much sought after for their exceptional quality and heritage values. Momotaro is a Japanese brand that uses only the finest Japanese cloths to fashion outstanding jeans that have a growing army of devotees.
Fashions come and go all the time, of course, and whilst jeans have never really fallen out of favour since they first became fashion statements, the nature of these wardrobe staples has changed over the years. Originally denim was produced on shuttle looms which produced a tightly woven cloth from a continuous thread. This cloth was narrow and possessed a finished edge or self edge hence the term selvedge.
Selvedge denim was high quality but costly. Jeans made the transition from work wear to casual wear in the 1950s when the on screen images of stars like Marlon Brando and James Dean popularised the look. The demand for jeans necessitated the production of wider and cheaper fabrics. The old shuttle looms were replaced by projectile looms and the nature of denim changed. Traditional denim had been untreated and required wearing in. Now people wanted the finished look from the outset and so denim was treated to shrink and soften it. Then there were trends for faded and distressed jeans.
Now the values of traditional selvedge denim are being appreciated once more. Japanese manufacturers are using shuttle looms to weave fine selvedge denims and specialist brands are fashioning jeans with heritage qualities. Momotaro jeans are much sought after and we are delighted to stock them here at Jean Store.
The Momotaro name is a tribute to a character in Japanese folklore. Legend has it that a small boy called Momotaro emerged from a giant peach and came to earth to become the son of an elderly couple who were rejuvenated by their new son and motivated to follow their dreams.
Momotaro jeans are fashioned from beautiful 100% Zimbabwean cotton selvedge denim and feature a unique pink selvedge line. Zimbabwean cotton is valued for its ability to hold indigo dyes, its durable nature and its ability to produce great fades. The jeans are completed by cool finishing touches including pink thread, copper rivets and sheepskin leather patches. The jeans are "made by hand without compromise" and are a fabulous fusion of heritage cloths and contemporary fits. Until recently Momotaro jeans were not available outside of Japan and so we are pleased to now feature these exceptional styles here at Jean Store.
