Few footwear labels can boast the credibility and universal appeal of Converse which is pretty amazing for a company that began life producing galoshes! Converse was founded by Marquis Mills Converse in 1908 and initially made only protective footwear. The first Converse sporting footwear styles were tennis shoes but the real turning point came in 1917 when the All Star basketball shoe was evolved. Together with the famous star insignia, the All Star sneaker became an iconic style. However, like most organisations, Converse had its ups and downs over the years.
For many years Converse had few competitors. With nothing to rival the All Star, the company prospered but by the 1980's new brands and styles were coming to the fore. Converse ran into trouble and the All Star could have been lost for good. Perhaps it was the threat of losing Converse forever that was instrumental in its resurgence because when Nike acquired the brand the iconic shoes became all the rage once more. Now we can't get enough of Converse but the range isn't just about footwear.
