Dr Martens 1461 - Aqua Hug Me Leather
The original 1461 shoe is undeniably iconic. But there’s a duality to it, even in its earliest days, when the 1461 was marketed as “A stout shoe made from all the same materials as the 1460, which can be worn for working or sporting occasions.” Above ground to underground. Utilitarian, and also a symbol of self-expression. Basic black is set aside in favor of a fresh injection of color in our rich, soft Hug Me leather, all with matching laces.
This 1461 has all its Dr. Martens DNA intact, including a classic yellow stich and the iconic AirWair bouncing sole, that’s oil-and-fat resistant with good abrasion and slip resistance, and has been since 1960. This shoe is Goodyear-welted, meaning the upper and sole are sewn together in our heat-sealed z-welt stitch for enhanced comfort. This 1461 is made with Hug Me, a medium-weight leather that’s naturally tumbled for a soft feel.

Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German army during World War II. While on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. When the war ended and some Germans recovered valuables from their own cities, Märtens took leather from a cobbler's shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with air-cushioned soles
